Animal Rescue

Animal Rescue is the rehoming portion of Animal Liberation Aotearoa.

The aims of Animal Rescue are:

- to raise funds for the many animals that we come across on a day to day basis who are in need of medical treatment and a home. Animal Liberation is not just about protesting and many of us animal rights activists are always finding and taking in stray animals or involved in rehoming ex-farmed animals such as ex-battery hens. This is both time consuming and expensive; for example in the last two months we have found three stray kittens and one cow and re-homed 350 ex-battery hens; to date this has cost upwards of $1000.

- to encourage people to foster and rehome stray animals that they find themselves rather than relying upon organizations such as the SPCA who are already very over whelmed with animals. It is very rewarding helping stray and abused animals and seeing them go to loving new homes but it seems that many people feel that it is too hard or that they do not have the skills. People also do not realize how many animals that go to Animal Control and the SPCA are put down because they can not cope with the volume of animals. The more animals people take in themselves means that less animals will be killed by these organizations. Animal Rescue aims to share practical information and skills with everyone so that they can feel confident taking care of animals in need.

- to increase the number of people involved in fostering animals and build relationships between the numerous existing re-homing networks.

The stories and pictures below are those of the animals that we have had the pleasure of helping and placing in loving homes.

Up Early with the Rooster

1st December '08

Early this morning we found a lost little rooster from Western Springs Park wondering through the streets of Western Springs near the motor way. He must have walked all the way through the park and across Great North Road to get to Ivanhoe Road. More . . .

Glen Eden Cat Rescue

October '08

This week ALA learnt of a house in Glen Eden where several cats had been abandoned by the tenants. The house is due to be demolished as part of Council works along the nearby streamside. The tenants had moved out and left their cats there. Initially we thought there were only two or three cats there however after further investigation and a call from the SPCA we established that there are nine cats (six adults and three eight-month old kittens). More . . .

Taupiri Hens

June '08

In June 2008 animal rescue got word that Stroma Park Poultry Farm in Taupiri were selling their end of lay hens and that those that were not sold would be taken to slaughter for use in processed chicken foods (such as nuggets) and pet foods. More . . .

Little Cow - Saved from Paddock of Horrors

April '08

Four weeks ago while in the Waikato, animal rights activists stumbled across a paddock of recently dehorned ‘dairy' cattle. The faces of these adult cows were covered in blood as were their tails, the grass, fence posts and water trough. More . . .

Mercer Kittens

April '08

In April 2008 we were driving around the countryside near Mercer and out of the corner of our eye spotted a tiny little kitten sitting on the white painted strip on the side of the road. We stopped and upon investigation found that there were actually two little kittens sitting next to their mother who had been hit and killed by a car. More . . .

Mangere Kittens

Late '07

The issue of responsible ‘pet' ownership, or as animal rights activists prefer responsible care for companion animals, is traditionally the domain of the SPCA and local council animal welfare units. These bodies are, however, among the largest killers of animals in Aotearoa and have little political will to tackle such issues it is time that those of us with a more holistic analysis of animal rights at least open up dialog on this issue and put some solutions on the table.
